We recently had the pleasure of interviewing Benjamin Alva, the founder of Maverick Bioworks, a company focused on developing a platform1 that makes enzyme and organism development more sustainable and efficient, eventually allowing processes replacing traditional industrial processes to occur.
Benjaminโs journey to establishing Maverick Bioworks was inspired by his founding of an intercollegiate Bioengineering Initiative to slow the destruction of coral reefs due to climate change. This group worked on genetically modifying organisms that live inside coral to become resistant to high temperatures and high solar radiation.
Maverick Bioworks is a member of the Y Combinator S22 cohort and is currently working toward developing an enzyme to break down resistant Lithium sources to release the element in its ionised form. Benjamin hopes that Maverick can create a partnership with a Lithium supply chain and start applying a pilot program with their technology.
